English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Admin Staff —

Dear parents

There has been some confusion around students who go to ESOL, (English Speakers of other Languages) lessons during the school day at JCS. I would like to explain how this works.

All students in state or state integrated schools in NZ get funding to learn English for the following reasons

  • They do not speak English as a first language at home
  • One or more parents or caregivers are immigrants from a country where English is not the main official language
  • If a student was born in a country where English is not the main, official language

Some student’s English is good when it comes to day to day language but they struggle when it comes to using academic, subject specific language which they need to successfully access the curriculum.

Students whose academic English is such that they can successfully access the curriculum, and are funded, are given extension English.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the above.

Many blessings
