Senior A Volleyball – Otago Champions
Our Senior A Volleyball team delivered an outstanding performance at the recent Otago Regional Championships, competing for both the title of best team in Otago and seeding for the upcoming National Championships in Palmerston North.
The tournament began strongly with a comfortable straight-sets win over Cromwell College. A tougher challenge followed against Otago Boys’ High School, with the match going to five sets. In a composed and determined performance, the boys secured the decider 15–10. A further win over Bayfield High School saw the team finish top of their pool.
It was particularly pleasing to see the development of our younger players — Ezra H, Ben G, Jonty T, and Angus H — who stepped up under pressure and showed significant growth in their confidence, skills, and teamwork across the tournament.
This set up a semi-final against King’s High School, who have dominated Otago volleyball in recent years. In a statement performance, our boys won in straight sets to advance to the final against Trinity Catholic College, widely regarded as the form team of the season.
The final proved to be a memorable contest. After falling two sets behind, the team responded with composure and determination, taking the third set convincingly. The fourth set was a tense battle, eventually won 29–27, before the boys carried that momentum into the fifth to secure a 15–13 victory.

Special acknowledgement goes to coach Ella Roonery for her calm leadership, knowledge, and positivity throughout the tournament. Captain William C also led superbly, setting the standard through his actions and holding the team together in key moments.
Five players — Will R, Max N, Jonny H, Yoko F, and William C — were named in the Tournament Team, an excellent reflection of both individual quality and the strength of the team.
The team represented the College with pride, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and a strong commitment to improvement throughout the competition.
Finally, a sincere thank you to Bonnie Gradwell for all of her organisation and support behind the scenes.
We wish the team all the best as they head to Nationals next week!
