Agribusiness and Otago University combine for a curriculum first!

Progress in educational developments often take a series of small, yet significant steps to realize the intended goal. Years of background work came to fruition this past week as the first two Agribusiness scholarships were awarded to our top graduates from 2018, and the University announced a specialised pathway degree for those graduating from the Agribusiness programme and other similar programmes country-wide.

Angus Cotton and Hannah Rogers (pictured above) are smiling this week after being awarded their Agribusiness scholarships worth $6000 from the University of Otago. In an effort to attract more Agriculture and Agribusiness students, the University has offered two annual scholarships to the top girl (from Columba College) and boy (from JMC) from each Year 13 Agribusiness graduating class.

Additionally, and after a number of years of development and planning, the University also announced a new specialised degree, the Bachelor of Applied Science in Agricultural Innovation, to cater for Agricultural and Agribusiness students graduating from our College's and other school's programmes.

John McGlashan College headmaster, Mr Neil Garry, noted, "There is a growing demand for skilled workers in the primary industries. John McGlashan College is a leader in the provision of a course of study in Agribusiness which exposes academically capable students to a wide range of skills. (Our) Agribusiness course will open up opportunities in a myriad of occupations 'beyond the farm gate'. The course is inspiring, challenging and diverse, and now has a recognised pathway to follow at Otago University beyond secondary school."
