Extension opportunity for senior students
At John Mcglashan we are given many opportunities outside the classroom. Earlier this year, I took a first-year distance paper in Theology at the University of Otago. The course was fully funded by STAR (Secondary-Tertiary Alignment Resource). It was a challenging and rewarding introduction to tertiary study. The course was taught through audio conferences with students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds across the country. It was a real eye-opener to just how much our society has been influenced, throughout the ages and today, by Christian thought and ethics . The material was very engaging and made us question why we believe different facts and values. We also looked at a number of other world-views, which gave insight to many different cultures and ways of thought. As distance students, we had plenty of support with our study as well as access to the University library.
I would highly recommend this course to any students in Y13 next year, particularly those interested in psychology, history, religions and English-based subjects. The work definitely tests multitasking skills and procrastination, however hard work and prudent study are greatly rewarded come exam time in mid-June. With funding available, it is a free course and a very handy head start to University study. The course can be cross-credited to future degrees.
