Basketball Team Development trip

Jack Byrne & Alex Stone —

Last Friday the John Paul II Bishops travelled to Christchurch

to play against teams from Hillmorton High School and Papanui High School for preparation towards the “A” Premierships Tournament at the end of August in Nelson. The boys had a very successful weekend playing two Christchurch teams Papanui and Hillmorton High School. On Saturday it was a change of scenery watching the Canterbury Schools and Men’s grade basketball. Below is a small blurb from each game.

Friday 21/07/23

Game 1

John Paul II vs Papanui

John Paul II started off slowly against Papanui but managed to build a lead in the second quarter. John Paul maintained this lead going into the third quarter, but Papanui managed to tighten down the score, shooting well from the three-point line. Ultimately, John Paul II weathered this comeback, and extended the deficit, winning 99-82.

Game 2

John Paul II vs Hillmorton

John Paul II got out to an early lead against a young Hillmorton team, thanks to some great intensity on both sides of the ball. Hillmorton fought back late however, after hitting a barrage of three's to take the lead with twenty seconds remaining, but Lochie Gibson stepped up and hit a shot to put John Paul II up one, with seven seconds to go, and Sonny Haldane stole the ball to secure the victory.
