Y13 Trip to Orana Park

Dan Steggles —

Trends in Human Evolution

Tuesday saw seven Year 13 Biology students head over to Orana Park for the day to study their collection of Human Skulls as part of their ‘Trends in human evolution’ external. Students started by making detailed observations of several other primate skulls, utilizing the skills required to make comparisons between them. They then took a walk around the zoo to study some of these primates in the flesh to see how their movement is linked to their bone structure and muscle attachment.

Students then used the skills they learned previously to study a vast collection of replica human skulls representing some of the key pieces of evidence we have for human evolution before finally using their knowledge to place them in sequence from the earliest hominin fossil to us!

Although the weather took a turn for the worse on the journey back, all students learned lots and had a good time!
