Sport in the Covid Climate

Renee Hutchinson —

We know that for many students sport is a highlight of their school year and the ongoing disruption and cancellation of sport for the last two years has been a real blow to them. Unsurprisingly, many parents find the distinction between extra-curricular and curricular sport confusing.

The guidance we are all working from comes as a result of agreements between the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and Sport NZ. We have had to postpone our school athletic sports until later in the year (if we can hold it) and have come to the difficult decision to hold a reduced swimming sports event in March. This is due to the limit on numbers we can have in an enclosed space (under 100) and the vaccine requirements of pool users. Our swimming sports will only be open to competitive and club swimmers. Unfortunately, unvaccinated students will not be able to participate as a valid vaccine pass is a requirement of pool use.
