Year 10 Camp - Boyle River

Tony McNish —

The annual Year 10 Camp to Boyle River was enjoyed by all that participated. Many thanks to the staff and parents that come along to help out.

Camp for me was great! I found It fun and exciting, It pushed me to take a step out of my comfort zone, and learn to trust others. It was also a chance to create better friendships with our peers and I think we all have learned new things about one another's strengths and weaknesses.

The most enjoyable moments for me were getting to know my teammates and friends better by doing team building activities and sharing a few laughs actually a lot of laughs along the way which made it more enjoyable. The biggest challenge for our team was the swamp crossing. Our team struggled to communicate and a few miss placements led to some problems but we kept smiling throughout the whole thing, in the end, we failed to complete our task due to lack of communication but the moment was unforgettable.

I had slightly lifted my foot by accident and watched two of my teammates slide into the swampy water before I was dragged in and a full-on wrestling match broke out. I could remember everyone was laughing even though we managed to make the instrument crack up laughing as others stood to the side watching as it all unfolds. At that moment I learned that it's alright if you don’t succeed just laugh it off and try again.

Overall I found the camp to be a great learning experience for trial and error and when you work together as a team you can strive for greatness.

Boyle River Camp was a fun and exciting outdoor experience that helped me develop and refine many new and existing skills. There was a range of activities that I participated in, including an overnight tramp, rock climbing, the Flying Kiwi, the swamp, and the low ropes course. I thoroughly enjoyed all of these activities however my favorite activity was the Flying Kiwi. This involved wearing a harness attached to a rope and the rest of the group pulling you up into the air.

The tramp was difficult for me as I had never been tramping and thus lacked experience and knowledge. Despite this, I managed to learn from the adventure and enjoy the event. For me, the most memorable part of this trip was when an instructor told me that “life is a privilege you have to earn it.” Overall Boyle River Camp was a great experience that challenged me in many ways however I was able to persevere through these challenges and learn from my mistakes.

Boyle River was an experience that put me out of my comfort zone. I was able to try things I had never experienced before. I was privileged to be with a good group and two amazing instructors named Jess and Josh. My most memorable moment was rock climbing and the feeling of accomplishment as I made it to the top looking out at the beautiful view resonates with me. This camp was filled with many firsts for me and will be an experience that I will always treasure.

I enjoyed the moments we spent chilling at the lodge or doing team building activities which helped grow us closer together. The bus ride, the night out in the tent, tramping, nightline, high poles, and the swamp were also good memories. Time flew and before I knew it I was on the bus ride back home reminiscing the past couple of days.

One of the most memorable parts of the camp for me was the low ropes. My group experienced a lot of challenges, like when we were swinging across the ‘river’ and one member of my group sabotaged us by swinging in from the side, knocking everyone off the platform. The spiderweb was also challenging, as we frequently touched the ropes but pretended we didn’t because our leader wasn’t looking. The log - where we had to get into the order of our house numbers or the first letter of our names - was another difficult part for my group, especially when we weren’t allowed to talk and had to communicate using our hands. This made getting into the order of our house numbers a lot harder, and even more so when people hesitated or had harder numbers that were longer or involved zeros. I think these challenges helped my group because we learned that to achieve things we often have to work together well and communicate, and these strengthened us as a group.

The most challenging part for me was rock climbing. I didn’t think I had the upper body strength to make the climb, especially as I attempted the hardest one. It was very challenging due to a lack of hand and footholds, and I fell several times, but it was all worth it when I reached the top. I think that experience helped me to realize that I could do whatever I wanted if I put my mind to it.

I think that the most fun part of camp was the Rock Climbing because it was kind of challenging. The first one I did was the one at the left and it was surprisingly easy but the right one was the hardest. I had a hard time finding a crevice where my hand could fit so basically I was stuck in the middle. We went swimming in the river afterward and I went rock jumping with Jacob. It was pretty cool, I probably nearly drowned but Jacob was there so it was okay. The water was freezing but I got used to it and I enjoyed it.

One annoying thing is that all of the sun flies had a feast on my blood and I don’t even know if my insect repellent worked. I liked my group. Everyone got along and I think I also like the Nightline activity where we hold on to a rope blindfolded and we just follow the rope around in the forest. I found it fun for some reason I don’t know why, a lot of people were screaming though and I’m probably one of them.

The overall camp was very fun and I would recommend going there again. I didn’t think it would be fun because of the tramping but we ended up making good memories as a group.
