Year 9 Confidence Building

Holly Lindsay —

This week we took the Year 9 students to experience the climbing wall in the gym.

The aim of this was to help students build their confidence through what can be quite an intimidating experience. Students looked at ways they could motivate themselves, with a focus on positive self-talk.

We discussed some of the strategies they can use to help support themselves, each other, and whānau and friends. We related this to areas of our lives where potentially challenging situations could occur, and how we could use our reflections and learning from the climbing session to help ourselves meet those challenges head on.

For some students the personal challenge was to get on the wall, for others it was to do the belaying. The students showed great responsibility and maturity, as well as excellent support for each other.

A big thank you to all of the staff who were involved, including Phil Johnston Coates from Tai Poutini Polytech. A massive well done to all the students who pushed themselves past their comfort zones!

Ka pai!
