The slippery slope….

You will no doubt have heard that school attendance nationally has taken a massive dive, with fewer than 46% of students attending regularly in term one.

Regular attendance is counted as 90% or one day off per fortnight. If you think about this over a 10 year period, students attending 90% of the time still miss 1 full year of school by the end of Year 10. Scary stuff.

Attendance this week was always going to be lower than average as we have had 32 students involved in tournament week. There are 4 away with covid, and a head cold around, however only just over 72 students have shown up for school today. That means only 40% of JPII students are at school.

Yes, there is covid lingering, yes there are some winter illnesses around but not to the extent that we have seen our attendance drop today.

Please ask your son/daughter to check their attendance with their Whanau teacher, if it is below 90% then we would ask that you have a discussion looking at the data below;

NCEA Achievement is linked to attendance

Employers will look at attendance.

Attendance matters and every day at school learning counts, please consider this before taking time out of school. With derived grade exams fast approaching it is essential the students attend as many lessons as possible! Unless your student has a genuine illness, please send them to school!
