Journalism Cadet – Allied Press (Full-time, fixed contract)

Allied Press has an exciting opportunity for five people to join the 2023 intake of the Allied Press Journalism Cadet Programme – Te Waraki.

No journalism experience is necessary but a keen interest in news, journalism and their local community is essential.

Successful candidates will train and work in Allied Press regional offices for 12 months, starting mid-February, 2023.

Cadets will :

  • Be assigned to Allied Press community newspaper newsrooms where they will be paid to work and undertake comprehensive, on-the-job training in multi-media journalism.
  • Be paid for a 40-hour week, with any course work not completed during work hours to be finished in their own time.

Cadet training:

  • Course content for the in-house programme will be a mix of taught sessions, mentored on-the-job learning, specialist guest speakers and plenty of scope to produce news stories that appear in Allied Press print and online outlets.
  • Occasional block courses will be held in Dunedin.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
  • NCEA Level 3 or equivalent (or evidence you will likely have NCEA Level 3 by the end of 2022).
  • A keen interest in news/journalism.
  • Willingness to learn and train.
  • A strong work ethic, initiative and a positive outlook.
  • Ability to take direction and to work as an effective part of a team.
  • Preferably, a full driver’s licence.
