Harcourts West Coast Science Fair

Last Friday saw John Paul II host the Harcourts West Coast Science Fair.

This brought together the best Science Fair boards from around  the West Coast and involved many schools both Primary and Secondary.  The participating schools' were:

John Paul II High School, Greymouth High School, Buller High School, St Canice’s, Westport North, Westport South and St Patrick's.  It was also great to see students from both Kumara School and Cobden School coming along to view the other boards.

I would like to thank our guest Judges:

Heath Milne - Chief Executive of Development West Coast

Paul Caffyn - ONZM (Science with Botany and Geography + 50 years experience as a geologist)

Rhianna Hughes Eddy - West Coast Catchments Co-ordinator

Mark Petty - Land Surveyor

During the day we also had a presentation from the University of Canterbury delivered by Professor Adrian McDonald.  The students were given the opportunity to share in his research and help to launch a weather balloon from the school grounds collecting useful climate data on its travels back to Christchurch.

We were also lucky enough to have been sponsored by Harcourts that not only gave us $1500 towards prizes but both Managers Kevin and Graeme came along to run a Sausage Sizzle for us, which was enjoyed by both students and staff.  Thank you very much to Harcourts for your amazing sponsorship.

With well over 250 people in attendance it was a great day for the school and the wider community.

Next year JPII will run its Science Fair as normal but the West Coast event will be held at Westland High School.

Attached are the results from the days action.
