Kia ora koutou katoa

It has been another busy week at John Paul II High School.

On Wednesday, our first XV rugby players travelled to Darfield to play against Darfield High School. We are particularly proud of the way they acquitted themselves on and off the field. Their loss in the dying minutes of the game did not reflect the heart with which they played, and they did themselves and the school proud. I wish to acknowledge the support of our Sports Coordinator, Jasmine Dodemaide, and Marilyn Cook for making this happen and getting our team to Darfield there and back safely.

Thank you to everyone who checked in with their child(ren) regarding their uniform. My hoodie collection has not increased this week, and it’s good to see students wearing their school jackets. Wet weeks make leather shoes a better option than the canvas vans we are seeing. If you are having trouble buying shoes for your child, please get in touch with me and we can provide the uniform items they need.

Covid absences remain steady for staff and students, with winter ills also in the mix. Students who are isolating and well enough to work will find a wealth of learning material in their online classrooms. Information about hybrid learning is on the front of our website. If your child is feeling anxious about their work or assessment load, please get in touch with their dean.

On Tuesday 28th June, there will be a wānanga held at school for all students interested in participating in Kapa Haka. Led by Whaea Paula and Matua Jerry, we encourage all students to get involved. This day will be a combination of learning mau rākau and kapa haka. This is part of our curriculum and students should not worry about “missing” classes. We acknowledge the work of Whaea Paula and Matua Jerry, and the great progress our Kapa Haka students are making.

Wishing you all a safe and happy weekend.
