Year 10 and NCEA Level 1

With the seniors sitting their exams this week, club time was exchanged for an opportunity to run through the basics of NCEA with Year 10 students so that they can be fully up to date and aware of the changes taking place for them this year and next.

Key points from the information that was shared with them:

  1. NCEA Level 1 is changing next year – you will need 60 Level 1 credits + the literacy and numeracy co-requisite to achieve this qualification.

  1. The literacy and numeracy co-requisite consist of three short digital exams in which you can have multiple attempts to achieve. The first of these windows will be over three days, week commencing 30th October 2023. Once achieved, you will not have to sit these exams again and this will enable you to achieve qualifications at Level 1,2 and 3 NCEA (along with the necessary 60 credits at each level).

If you do not achieve this the first time, you will have another two attempts per year. For 2024 and 2025, there is also an alternative route to achieving this via completing specific standards that are linked to the co-requisite. Whilst this may be the best route for some of you, it will involve a heavier workload and the co-requisite via the exam route will, no doubt, be the best option for the majority.

Please be aware that without having achieved the literacy and numeracy co-requisite you are unable to achieve Level 1, 2 or 3 with NCEA.

  1. Students were asked to create their NZQA log in using the information on the PowerPoint (students will require their NSN, this is their national student number which is found in KAMAR).

  1. Over the next few weeks, you will be given your option choices via school point. It is essential that you sit down with your parents/whānau/teachers and discuss the right pathway for you. Religious Studies is compulsory, and you are strongly encouraged to take Maths, English and Science – as this will help keep your options open into Level 2 / Level 3 NCEA.

We understand that many students will potentially be anxious about these assessments, however we will support every student to achieve their academic best.

As an initial step;

  • Mrs Dellaway, our Literacy Navigator, will also be speaking with the Year 10’s next week during Hauora time to offer some guidance, hints and tips. This will be a chance for the students to see what the questions look like and get a feel for what they are being tested on.

  • On Thursday 12th October we will be running a parents information evening, more details will follow. This will provide us with an opportunity to run through some of the changes that are happening at NCEA Level 1 next year, a chance to ask questions and to give you some advice on how you can best support your child during the year.

As next year progresses, we would expect more students to achieve the co-requisite, this will enable us to focus the support on those that require more intervention and help to do so.
