STEAMM

STEAMM (Science, Technology, English, Arts, Maths and Mātauranga Māori)

With only the Y9 Students in School for STEAMM this week, we had an opportunity to do things a little differently.

Students worked in their houses and in small teams to complete a challenge that incorporated skills from the STEAMM subjects. For them to access the instructions and materials for the challenge the students had to first work out the combination to a padlock that was attached to a toolbox in which they were found.

Overall Saints were clear winners, working together extremely well as a team.

STEAM learning is built around providing students with an opportunity to use the skills that are very much going to be in demand in the future jobs market. Forecasts estimate that 80% of future careers will require Math’s and Science skills alone.

Here at JPII one of the aims of our Wednesdays is to create room within the curriculum for STEAMM. Students who engage in this tend to;

  • think outside the box.
  • feel safe to express innovative and creative ideas
  • feel comfortable doing hands-on learning
  • take ownership over their learning
  • work collaboratively with others
  • understand the ways that Science, Math's, the Arts, and Technology work together
  • become increasingly curious about the world around them and feel empowered to change it for the better.

Having delivered the session on Wednesday it was awesome to see students doing all of these things!

We will be rolling with this model next time round with the Y10’s and into Term 3
