Emily & Mikayla leading the way by Aoibheann McClunie

JPII Students Compete in Spring Challenge

With Aoibheann McClunie

A few weekends ago Mikayla, Emily and myself did the spring challenge adventure race, which lucky for us was in Greymouth for our first year doing it. After our first and final training as a team, and a quick walk before the briefing, we spent an afternoon looking at maps and discussing our plan of attack.

Weetbix and an excess of up and go was our fuel for the day, and we began the 3 hours with a run to our raft. We then rafted 9km down the Arnold River, which we could argue was more of a social event for Mikayla than a workout, who was enjoying the company of the team on the raft with us. We then quickly transitioned to the bike, which proved a bit too quick when we realised we forgot two of our maps and our code sheet. Once this issue was resolved, we spent 18km cruising back towards Moana, before beginning our final stretch, the run. This part I personally found the most enjoyable, as it was more of a mud run and was quite funny and exciting to know how close we were to the finish line (and donuts).

At the finish line we were greeted by many people, but unfortunately missed out on meeting Richie McCaw, who had already got his donuts and left. Overall, the event was one of the best experiences I’ve had, and I would recommend it to anyone as the 3 hour is much less difficult than you’d expect, and is so much fun to do with your mates. Next year Mikayla and I are going on to do the 6 hour course with Neve, and Emily is having another go with Mya and Jess.
