Orana Park

On Wednesday this week the Y13 Biology Class visited Orana park.

As well as feeding the giraffes (which was to be honest the highlight of the trip), the students followed a zoo school workshop on Human Evolution. Initially the students were faced with many primate skull replicas to work on, measuring a various range of anatomical features. They then went to look at these primates in action to see how the skull features aided or could explain their locomotion.

On return the students took the same measurements on some of their huge collection of hominin skulls to observe any trends or differences. They were then faced with the task of putting these skulls into a timeline.

We were joined on the day by Marjan Sprock, who accompanied our students as a parent helper, however being a local vet was able to use her skills to really help the students with their knowledge and understanding of the topic. I would like to take the opportunity to thank her for giving up her time, it is very much appreciated.

Plenty of photos were taken!
