RUGBY

On Wednesday 22nd June, we were finally blessed with good weather! Which meant we were able to pursue the Brockbank Games. Wednesday was solely against Greymouth HS. We sent our U15s to the Blaketown Rugby Club. The Boys were able to come away with a win. With one small training and no previous games played prior. Payton Guthrie and Nio Verhoeven stepped up as leaders, got the boys warmed up and constructed a good first halve lead. Nio scored the majority of tries before having to leave half time with Payton and Eddie Motu. Kurt Berry Captain of the U15s held the team together for the last half, playing good defense the boy took the win 43-39. The boys were thrilled and are ready for their next game against Buller HS.

The girls from Westland HS, Greymouth HS and JPII have peaked this season. JPII played 10 aside against Greymouth HS. Emily Berry, captain of the mixed girls' team, showed outstanding leadership skills as she was able to aid her team to a win! Sammy Donaldson, Mia Brake, Emily, Reama Motu and Marley Solia-Cole scored for the team. With one player down they were still able to come away with a win!

Starting the 1st XV game without our starting 15, the boys were able to make a strong start. The boys had good defensive and prevented Greymouth HS from scoring in the first half. Nio, Mac Gibson (captain) and Ben Giles scored, and one conversion kick from Ryan Brenmuhl in the first half taking the team to 17 nil. Coming into the second half with a strong lead the boys continued to fight for the win. Aston Wilson (vice-captain) making an 80m run away try, and Ryan scoring the last try of the day. Payton made the conversion and stopped Harvey (opposition) only several meters away from the try line, preventing Greymouth HS from scoring. The boys came away with a strong win, 29-5. Ben was the selected player of the day from Greymouth HS, which everyone could agree with.

An outstanding result from all three teams, taking out Greymouth HS! The students showed great leadership and did John Paul II HS proud. A special thank you to Maddy Crawford (GHS sports coordinator) for being a prompt medic on the day and Nobby for refereeing the girls and 1st XV team. Bring on the next Brockbank Rugby round against Buller HS.
