Catholic Character

This image of Mary was painted in 1948 by Julia Lynch (1896-1975; also known as Sister Mary Lawrence)

The Feast of the Assumption is this Sunday; the celebration of  Mary being welcomed into heaven.  As the patron Saint of New Zealand / Aotearoa a new icon has been commissioned by the New Zealand Catholic Bishops, "Te Ara a Maria" has been painted by Damien Walker from the Studio of St Philomena in Christchurch.  Before being exhibited around the country it is to be commissioned at St Mary of the Angels in Wellington this Sunday.

It was heartening to receive a note from the Principal of St Canice, Westport thanking the JPII community for the parcels of food last week. Thank you to our whole community for your support.

In the October school holidays (14th – 16th) students from Catholic Cathedral College (CCC) will be here on a Remar experience. This is an initiative from Champagnat in the Pacific to encourage youth activity in our school. Remar has been established at CCC for five years now, and here at JPII we are most appreciative that they are coming to share the programme with us here in Mawhera /  Greymouth.

Congratulations to the below students who are participating in the Eucharistic Ministry training with Fr Mathew.
