Careers News

Andrea Williamson —

It has been a busy Term 2, with students having had a lot of experiences to assist them with ideas and information for future career and study pathways.

Below are some of this term's experiences, including visits to the school by a range of careers providers and students' visits to various providers.

Careers Expo

On Thursday 10th May all Year 12 students attended the Careers Expo at the Horncastle Arena. Here they had the opportunity to gain information and talk to a range of employers and tertiary providers from different areas and industries around New Zealand.

Shadowtech for Girls

Mrs Carryer took a group of Year 10 students to Ara to take part in their Shadowtech Day, where they had an opportunity to experience what working in the technology sector is like and to look at education pathways that will lead to those roles.

Law and Criminal Justice

A number of senior students considering this pathway attended different sessions held by the University of Canterbury and University of Otago to help them decide and plan their future study and career pathways.

Ekea Year 11

A group of students took part in this two day leadership programme in conjunction with the University of Canterbury.

Flight Attending Day

On Monday 11th June a group of students attended a Flight Attending Taster Day at the NZ School of Tourism in Christchurch. Here they spent the day learning about the courses, career and lifestyle of a flight attendant. Students also learnt how to complete a safety briefing including using the microphone along with a full demonstration. It also helped students to decide if that maybe a possible future career pathway for them, along with experiences and qualifications they can gain to assist them.

Visits to the School

All senior students are welcome to attend talks held in the Senior Study Room, usually during Period 5 on a Monday. This term we have had the International Travel College, Camp America, Defence Careers, Your Education Student Exchange Programme, The Matagouri Club from Otago University, NZ Tertiary College and the University of Canterbury talking about their scholarships for 2019.

Logan Emery - ex KHS Head Boy

It was lovely to catch up with Logan Emery during my recent visit to the University of Canterbury. Logan is in his second year of a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in International Business Management, and has been lucky to secure an exchange in Singapore for the second semester of his course. Logan is also part of the Executive in the Global Go China Connection Club at UC. The aim of the club is to inspire students to pursue China-related opportunities and to help them succeed in a world increasingly connected with China. Logan is also coming in to school to talk to students considering University of Canterbury before he heads off to Singapore.
