Term 3 has been another busy term in the Dance Department.

KHS Dance Showcase 2020 - ‘RELEASED’

Our 2020 KHS Dance Showcase ‘Released’ featured dancers from Years 9 to 13 presenting original choreographies, ensemble performances, and competition choreography performances from DanceNZmade. Thanks to our wonderful M.C., Emily Harris, and our amazing lighting and sound crew, Alyssa Harris & Jake Tane. It was very impressive to see so many original and varied dance works being presented.

Hagley Dance Company Schools’ Tour

Hagley Dance Company 2020 joined us in week 8 for our yearly dance workshops. Every year, as a part of their pre-tertiary course, the Hagley Dance Company students create original choreographies, specifically catered to be taught to senior dance classes in Canterbury high schools. The wonderful company of dancers performed their dances for us then taught us their contemporary and hip hop dance choreographies, which we will use for group dance assessments.

Royal NZ Ballet - ‘Venus Rising’ Workshops

In week 9, Lauren Byrne from Royal NZ Ballet also visited us to run a dance workshop with our Years 11, 12 & 13 dance students. Lauren took us through an intensive warm-up with lots of leaps and crawling and then taught us repertoire from RNZB’s 2020 touring show ‘Venus Rising’ (which has been postponed three times, and now unfortunately cancelled), which “capture the spirit and power of Venus Rising – brightest of stars, herald of the dusk and of the dawn.” We learned two pieces, the first by Andrea Schermoly entitled ‘Within, Without’, and the second by Sarah Foster-Sproull called ‘Ultra Folly’.
