Tournament Week - Boys' Football

Edward Kwon —

From the beginning of the year, the team had decided that we would enter the Football tournament, being held in Christchurch this year.

There were many boys who were keen to play for the team and trials were held at the beginning of the season. Although all the boys who trialled were talented, we could only have one team of 15 players, so we had to decide who would make the cut. Over three days of trials, we finally put a team together who would compete in Wednesday sport and play in the tournament. The final roster consisted of Jake Bishop (Captain), Connor Spear, Joel Reed, Hayden Bowles, James Price, Sam Williams, Kaleb Roberts, Robin Hodson-Seel, Samuel Alexander-Bailey, Aryan Lakhera, James Duncan, Levi Roberts, Nathan Robinson, Zulfikar Khan and Marli Pradhan.

Once the final roster was set, we were ready to begin our season in Wednesday sport. The boys did well over the season and ended with a 9-1 record and making the finals, where we were up against Linwood College. We had two hard fought battles against the Linwood team both pool games, winning one game and narrowly losing the other game. The final was another fight to the end and, to make the game more interesting, the pitch on which we were playing was flooded from the rain the day before. The boys dug deep and came up with a 3-2 victory and won their division.

At tournament the boys were feeling confident after their victory during Wednesday sport and started really strong, with two convincing victories over Mt Hutt and Heretaunga, however they lost the final pool match to Wakatipu. The team still managed to make it into the top 8 and, after losing our quarterfinals, came 8th overall out of 16 teams in the Jim Wishart Tournament.

We were impressed with the level of play and maturity that our team showed during the week, as many members of the team were Year 9s and 10s, while the other schools competing were composed of senior students who had been playing for years together. The boys were stoked with their result and have made it a goal to finish even higher next season.
