Tournament Week - Senior Girls' Netball

Jayne Dewe —

The staging of the 54th Annual South Island Secondary Schools' Netball Championship was held at Hagley Park, from 4th-7th September.

This year witnessed the School A Netball team back with A grade status and ranked 32nd, the bottom of the grade!

In the early rounds the team faced the big guns of St Hildas, Waitaki Girls and Craighead Diocesan. Although two games were close, the school team found the jump from B Grade to A Grade quite challenging. However, a one goal loss to Waitaki Girls convinced our girls they could not only compete, but could genuinely challenge the more experienced, fancied teams.

The week progressed through the bitter, cold and windy weather and the girls started to win. They successfully notched up victories over Lincoln High School, Mt Aspiring College and Avonside Girls, to finally finish in 25th place. This was a huge relief, as this result secures A grade status for next year and also a more favourable draw in the early rounds of the competition in 2018.

These girls have achieved so much since last year and have actually moved up 32 places over two playing seasons! This upward trend signals more success for netball in the future!

A huge thank you to our sponsors, Underground Brown and Craze Fashion, for their unwavering support and of course to a wonderful group of parents and caregivers that supported this team over the season and Tournament Week!
