International News

Nicky Ewins —

This term has seen plenty of involvement from international students with their school sport – Badminton and Basketball in particular.

All the students represented the school well, making it through to semis and finals. Well done Mika, Karen, Ayane, Yuno, Hibiki, Kim, Yuta, Min (badminton) and Melina (basketball).

Camps and tramps have kept all the Outdoor Education students ‘fit’ and busy, with new experiences and challenges being achieved along the way, new territories being explored and new activities undertaken.

Our Hospitality, Arts, Graphic Design, Dance, Music and Technology students have all enjoyed preparing, creating and performing in the school production, enjoying showcasing their talents in a wide range from these subjects.

We have hosted two Japanese schools, Omiya Nishi High School and Junten High School from Tokyo, in short term stays. They all enjoyed interaction with buddies in class, a range of new subjects and trips to our local attractions. Highlights were eating fish ‘n’ chips and hokey pokey icecream, holding and seeing lambs born, stargazing, seeing kiwi and eating lunch outside. All our students are well looked after by our wonderful families in the community who take on this important role of “Hosting”! This experience is always worthwhile and a great way to appreciate and promote the culture we have and to learn about others.

Our Internationals students enjoyed some educational and enjoyable trips during exam week. They were entertained at the Antarctic Centre where feeding the penguins was enjoyed, along with riding the Hagglund and watching "Happy Feet". Our day at Orana Wildlife Park saw handing feeding of the giraffe, tiger feeding, kiwi actively feeding and the lion encounter experience, a very 'up close' and personal encounter with the big cats. Great attractions and activities were enjoyed by all.

As the end of term approaches, it is time to say FAREWELL to the following students who have been with us, to wish them all the best in their futures and encourage them to continue on their ‘learning’ journey:

Airi Ida from Japan, Melina Leonhard from Germany, and Yun Ji Choi (Bailey), Yeonju Choi (Ju), Wonmin Baek (Min), Hyeongin Lee (Hayden), Seokhyeon Kim (Kim), all from Korea.

We have loved having them with us and will miss them immensely!! We know that they will take some great memories with them and have enjoyed the opportunity to be here at Kaiapoi High School.
