Andrea Williamson —

This term has been busy saying goodbye to the seniors who are leaving us - especially the Year 13 students.

Some of the Year 13 students are planning to continue studying, such as at university or places like Ara, where they will study a vocational pathway such as Nursing or Baking. Some students have been very lucky to gain a scholarship and if not, this year most students still receive one year of free fees. We have students going to universities in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, Palmerston North, Tauranga, and Hamilton. We also have some students working, training in apprenticeships, and a number going to Camp America. We also have a number of Year 12 students who are taking up employment or completing pre-trade courses next year too. Wherever they are going and whatever they are doing, we wish them all well and hope to keep in touch.

It has been a quieter term for trips, but we have had the following:

  • 40 Year 10 students, with Mr Liddell and Mr Graham, visited Avon City Ford at Sockburn for a very informative visit on the wide range of career pathways and training that is available. They then went to the NZ Trucking Show, where they were able to interact with a large number of companies that use the trucking and transport industry as part of their business to learn about the wide range of career pathways they offer.
  • Mr Kwon also took a group of Year 10 students to Aukaha Tau Tekau at the University of Canterbury. (See his article in this newsletter)

I personally attended a Careers conference for the first time in a number of years and was very excited to see an ex-student Delaney Dowall (pictured) on the stage, talking about her pathway from NCEA Level 2 and Year 12 at Kaiapoi High School to study early childhood, in front of 700 people.
