Sports News

Hayley Newton —

As we finish a year of sports at KHS, we congratulate all of our students that have contributed to the success of our sporting opportunities at school.

Your commitment to your team and how you represented KHS proudly is a real credit to you all. For us in the sports office, it has been an honour to have been part of your sporting journey this year.

We are very grateful to a large number of coaches and managers as we have had teachers, staff, students, parents, and members of our community involved with our teams. We definitely could not offer all of our sporting opportunities without your help and we cannot thank you enough.

To our Year 13 students, we thank you for the contribution you have given to your chosen sports and teams. We wish you all the best for the future and hopefully, we see you around on the sports grounds in years to come - we hope you cherish the memories that you take away from being involved in sport at KHS.

Cricket

Our Girl's Cricket team took part in the Forward Foundation Cricket 1-day tournament. The games were all T20 matches, and the girls had a great day, with 1 win & 1 loss, and they came home with the Spirit Award, which was a great reflection on the team of girls that took part. Lots of happy faces and the weather playing its part made for a great day of cricket. We continued with the T20 game and had a friendly match v RHS, which was played in great spirit. Haidee Tiffen facilitated the game and offered her expertise wherever she could, and this was appreciated by all of the girls. The girls were lucky to have the NZ Cricket President, Lesley Murdoch, attend the match and score the game. She also spoke to the teams before and after the game, and she enjoyed seeing the girls embrace the opportunity to play cricket.

Korfball

We have had three teams playing in the Friday night competition this term. All teams have really taken this game to the next level with their understanding of the game and working so well as a team. All three of our teams made it to the top 4 in their grade, with one of our Junior teams finishing 2nd. Our Junior Korfball team took part in the SISS Tournament, which was held at Mainpower Stadium. The team played six games over the two days and we just kept improving as a team with every game. The ability of our more experienced players, combined with the enthusiasm of our newer players to the game, was a great combination and showed we deserved our place in the final. We had so many exciting games, but our final was so close and intense right to the final whistle and to only lose by 1 showed real teamwork, which had developed over the weekend.

Basketball Senior Girls Nationals

During the holidays our Senior A Girls Basketball team traveled to Palmerston North to take part in the Secondary Schools' Nationals, which we qualified for by finishing 4th at the SISS Tournament, during winter tournament week. This was the first ever for a KHS Girls' team. The girls played six days of basketball and were away for a total of eight nights, so it was a long tournament and a great experience for all of the girls and the coaching staff. Our team had some very close games during pool play which went both ways, and this put us into the middle 8 section, playing off for 9th-16th. Through these playoff games, our team will take away a lot of valuable learning in an effort to try and get back there next year. We finished the tournament a very creditable 16th with such a young side, which was a fantastic result. A great tournament and experience for our girls, who represented KHS proudly.

Pool

Each Wednesday we have a keen group of students that take part in the Pool in Schools programme at the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club. From this programme, we had students represent KHS at the South Island Secondary Schools' Pool Tournament, which was held at the Richmond Club. The top four players from each school competed in this tournament as singles and doubles. Well done to Ritai Solomon, Hadlee Jones, Te Kaha Epiha & Korbin Symonds-Shakespeare, who proudly represented our school in this tournament, and also to Alyssa Bailey who took part in the Canterbury Competition at the Cashmere Club.

Athletics

Canterbury Secondary Schools' Athletics finally got to take place this term, after being rescheduled from the start of the year. Well done to the six students that took part, Pai Wynyard 1st 3000m & 1500m, Tia Wynyard 1st High Jump (1.95m), Lily Morrison 2nd Long Jump, 6th 200m & 100m, and our girls' relay team, Lily Morrison, Eva Parry, Tymisha Oldroyld & Mereani Drulidruli, that placed 4th. Best of luck to Tia and Pai who now move on to the Secondary Schools' Nationals in Inglewood in early December.

Canoe Polo

Our Canoe Polo team was lucky to have gained a coach for term 4, who was very keen to get the team training each week and even sessions at the local pool to get everyone confident in the water. The team played in the Wednesday competition at Lake Rua and we have appreciated our yr 13 students that have helped build Canoe Polo and allowed KHS to be competitive.

Wednesday Sports

Well done to all of our students that have been involved in a Wednesday Sports team this term. We have had teams playing Touch, Hockey, and Indoor Football in the interschool competition, as well as a group of keen boys wanting to give Bowls a go. These students have all represented our school well and it has been great seeing a lot of students giving a new sport a go this term.

Archery

Again this term we have had a number of students involved in Archery, which took place on the backfield. It is great seeing students participating and trying something different.

Volleyball

We had a lot of interest in volleyball this term with 11 teams taking part in the interschool competition on Mondays, with a number of teams making the top 4 in their grade. It was great to be able to play in this competition as we had to have our own in-school games in term 1. We look forward to entering some of our teams into the volleyball tournaments next year. There is definitely some talent among these students. We need to acknowledge our senior students who have helped coach, referee, and set up the gyms each week.

It has been great seeing so many students supporting the local sporting fixtures out on the Touch fields, at the courts playing Twilight Netball, and at the Basketball courts, and also coaching and refereeing the primary Friday night competition. Keep up the good work.

We wish you all a happy and safe holiday season and look forward to KHS Sport 2023.
