International News

Nicky Ewins —

We have had another busy term in the International Department.

Welcome to Yuma Nakijima who began this term. A warm Kiwi ‘kia ora’ goes out to you and we hope you are settling in well from Japan.

Visiting Schools included:

Omiya Nishi High School from Tokyo spent a week with us. They enjoyed ESOL, the chance to embrace our Maori culture through ‘poi’ making, and tried different subjects from what would be traditionally learnt at home, Physical Education, Music and Hospitality proving most popular.

Junten High School from Tokyo spent two weeks with us and were fully integrated in class with fabulous buddies. Opportunities to enjoy P.E., Cooking, Languages, Music and Art gave many an insight into new subjects and opportunities to learn. This group spent fun days at Willowbank and Adrenalin Forest.

All our students were hosted locally by our families, who gave them a taste of ‘kiwi living’ and provided many highlights during their stay. They were also looked after by many of our fantastic student ‘buddies’ during their stay, providing valuable advice and support and integration. We are very thankful for their time, effort and support.

Through our exchange programme,  we have had students from Korea and France spend time with us. Though somewhat short term, they have all experienced the New Zealand lifestyle, enjoying the scenery, farm life, mountains, outdoor activities, culture, food and friendly relaxed kiwi living. Challenging themselves through undertaking new subjects has seen these students grow in confidence and they now leave us with achievements gained and experiences enjoyed.

Sporting Success

A huge big congratulations to Fumika, Toshimi, Miyu, Mahiro, Maki, our Japanese Girls Badminton team, who won their section of the school competition. What a great achievement and a super bunch of 'fun loving, competitive and fabulous girls'.

Our boys team were awesome as well, so congratulations to Kazu, Yota, Hibiki and Yuta.

Congratulations to Mahiro and Kazu, winners of Badminton singles titles. Well done!!!

Congratulations and good luck to all our students who have and are taking part in concerts, competitions and activities, all very proud to represent Kaiapoi High School!

Another fabulous achievement was Hibiki and Ikeda taking part in the ‘Survival Camp’, proving to be perfect actors in each activity.

Homestay Families we need YOU!

Would you like to become involved with our International students and enjoy a different culture?  All our International students live with local families and enjoy the opportunity to embrace ‘kiwi’ living.

If you believe you could commit to spending some time with a student, take them on outings, care for them and enhance their experience of being with us, then you are who we want.

Homestay payments contribute to the students' cost of living and activities you would be doing with them.

Hosting can be short term of between 2-8 weeks, mainly group visits,  or long term 10-52 weeks, full time students.

Please ring our International office and we will send an application pack to you.

Our International students bring a cultural diversity to our school and gain a chance to learn, live and laugh in our friendly and welcoming environment.

We appreciate all the opportunities this brings us, and what we can do for them. Your support is greatly appreciated.
