Louise Johnson —

On Thursday 7th March, Kaiapoi High School held its annual School Athletics Day.

This day was organised and run by one of the Level 2 Physical Education classes and saw approximately 180 students taking part.

From early morning, we were extremely lucky to have the sun shining and an eager bunch of students who couldn’t wait to compete in various track and field events. This was an extremely successful day as athletes broke records and supported each other throughout the day. Congratulations to the following people who broke records, some of which were standing from the 1970s!

  • Lily Morrison, Junior Girls (U15) 100m, previous record from 1993, 12.69sec, new record 12.14sec.

  • Kaedin Fettes, Junior Boys (U15) Long Jump, previous record from 1988, 5.39m, new record 5.75m.

  • Lily Morrison, Junior Girls (U15) Long Jump, previous record from 1995, 4.81m, new record 5.23m.

  • Waimarie Watene-Mercep, Intermediate Girls (U16) Hammer Throw, previous record from 2014, 15.75m, new record 21.4m.

  • Lily Morrison, Junior Girls (U15) 200m, previous record from 1975, 28.5sec, new record 26.45sec.

  • Aliyah Newton, Senior Girls (U18) Hammer Throw, previous record from 2011, 19.76m, new record 23.19m.

  • Tiani Stanley, Junior Boys (U15) Hammer Throw, previous record from 2013, 21.52m, new record 26.64m.

  • Ben McIlraith, U14 Boys Hammer Throw, previous record from 2014, 16.64m, new record 19.11m.

As the day drew to a close, the excitement continued with the running of house relays. These relays not only provided great entertainment, but also fostered house spirit, as students cheered on their peers representing their respective houses.

A big thank you goes out to all the teachers and students who helped make the event possible and contributed to its success overall.
