International Department

Nicky Ewins —

A busy second term has seen many of our International students involved in school activities.

Activities include Outdoor Education camps at Boyle River, Stage Challenge Dance event, Buller Sports exchange, Hanmer geography trip, Tiki Tane show, University open days, Gifted and Talented Conference, CACTUS (boot camp), Mud run, Canteen roster, Wednesday sport and cultural events. All in all, everyone is enjoying the opportunity to engage, try new challenges and embrace the 'fun' life our school has to offer.

Cultural Learning Centre Opening

Our school celebrated the opening of our ‘student built’ cultural learning centre at the end of last term. This amazing achievement saw students returning who worked on the project, many locals who contributed, teachers and distinguished guests all present. All of our International students wore traditional costume and provided entertainment during the socialising afterwards. Lydia with her violin, Airi with her trumpet, Mika with her unicycle and the Thai group dancing. All were a great hit. The foods were created by the Hospitality students and represented each culture on show – Thai, German, Japanese, Chilean and New Zealand very delicious and were enjoyed by all.

Universal Cultural Exchange

The Thailand students from Universal Cultural Exchange spent 8 weeks immersing themselves in NZ traditions, foods, school and activities. Particular favourites were ‘fish n chips’, ice cream, roast lamb, eating outside while at school, making sandcastles and seeing sheep and kiwi. They headed home happy and thankful of the opportunities given. We look forward to Omiya Nishi High school from Tokyo and Junten High School from Tokyo arriving in Term 3. These groups will be hosted by our wonderful families and will enjoy activities and classes at school during their stay.

Farewells

We say FAREWELL to the following students who have been with us and wish them all the best in their futures and encourage them to continue on their ‘learning’ journey: Javiera & Antonia from Chile, Lydia, Johannes, Nick & Mark, all from Germany. We have loved having them with us and will miss them immensely!!
