Congratulations to the following Kaiapoi High School students for their sporting achievements in Term 1:

  • The 3x3 Basketball team that won the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Tournament played at Cowles Stadium recently.  The team members were Molly Cockburn, Helen Matthews, Sinead McConchie & Nikita Matenga-Sullivan.
  • The Kaiapoi Snr B Mixed Triathlon team of Kate Ward, Luke Price & Joseph Matthews, who were placed 1st in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Mixed Team event for the second year in a row!  The Kaiapoi Snr A Mixed Triathlon team of Sinead McConchie, Lewis MacDonald & James Price were placed 3rd in the event, which was also a fantastic result.
  • Year 11 student, Owen French, who spent a week in Tokyo at a Karate seminar and grading session, resided over by 83-year-old Grandmaster Seiko Suzuki Soke.  Owen returned home from Japan graded to Shodan, a Black Belt, 1st Dan. 
  • Year 10 student, Lucy Asher, who won a Bronze medal in the U14 Girls' Board Race at the National Surf Lifesaving Champs held in Mt Maunganui.
  • Year 11 students, James Clark and Teal Wilkie, who competed in the South Island Mountain Bike Champs held recently at Mt Hutt.
  • Year 13 student, Lewis MacDonald, who competed in the Outdoor Education Mad Dash in Christchurch recently and was placed 3rd in the Men's Open Event.  The event involved mountain biking the Rapaki Track, abseiling at Rapaki Crag and running the Crater Rim Walkway and down the Bridle Path.
  • Year 11 student, Luke Hopkinson, who gained 1st place in the 63kg Secondary Schools' Nationals Wrestling Champs.
  • Year 12 student, Angus Boyd, who gained 2nd place in the 250 Production at the NZ Motor Cycle Racing Champs.

Congratulations to our nine female rowers who competed in the South Island Secondary Schools' Rowing Champs at Twizel this term.

Congratulations to the 13 athletes who competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Athletics Prelims on Tuesday 19th March at the Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub in Wigram. It is fantastic sports facility and will be well used by the community and schools.

Students who competed were: McKenzie Bailey-McDowall, Madison Messervy, Adam Harford, Amber Brownlee, Delta Shaw, Ryan Sangster, Pai Wynyard, Tia Wynyard, Dylan Fern, Megan Green, Amy Reddish, Delaney Dowall and Corbin Day. Pai Wynyard was placed 2nd in the U14 Boys 3000m final and qualified for the South Island Secondary Schools' Champs. 

We had four of these students competing in the Finals on Saturday 23rd March. Pai Wynyard competed in the U14 Boys 1500m finals and finished 2nd. Ryan Sangster competed in the U19 Boys High Jump and was placed 2nd. Pai and Ryan went on to compete at the SISS Athletics Champs in Nelson where Pai finished 6th in both the U14 Boys 1500m and 3000m. Ryan was placed 3rd in the U19 Boys High Jump and qualified for the Nationals in Wellington in early December.  This was a tremendous achievement for both boys.

Congratulations to the seven swimmers who took part in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Swimming Champs recently.  The students who competed were: Ethan Blair, Caitlin Bosson, Dylan Fern, Ruby Evans, Jessica Hughes, Jake Thornton and Lasse Wilde. All the students swam well and should be proud of their achievements.

Wednesday Sport signups

Signup sheets for terms 2 & 3 are now on the sports noticeboard outside the sports office.  Please sign up asap if you are keen to play and get information from the sports office.

Basketball coaches needed

Anyone who is interested in coaching a KHS basketball team this year, please contact me on 375 5234.

Warm-up Tops & Hoodies for this year

This year the School will have navy blue warm-up tops, hoodies and polar fleece vests available. Orders will need to be to the sports office by 8 April please.  Samples will be available so sizing can be determined.  Payment to go to the main office at the time of the order.  We hope to have tops ready for the beginning of term 2.  Prices are as follows:

Warm-up tops $25    Hoodies $48    Vests $30
