Junior Girls' Basketball Tournament

Sharnae Ladkin —

Nine Years 9 and 10 girls travelled to Timaru to compete in the premier Junior Basketball Championship.

Due to their placing at last year's tournament, the girls had a tough pool where they had to verse Rangiora High School, Otago Girls’ High School, Waimea College and Cashmere High School. The girls’ went down fighting in the first four games, but managed to hold their own against Cashmere High School and gain their first win. This placed them in the 9th and 10th play-off against Christchurch Girls’ High School, whom they had lost to by 1 point in the Friday night basketball competition. With a solid start by all girls we were up by 20 points after the first quarter and looked to have the win in the bag. However, Christchurch Girls’ came back fighting and we were only ahead by 3 heading into the final quarter. We managed to finish strongly in the end, placing us 9th out of 18 teams. This was an awesome effort by all players as we had two of our starting lineup fouled off in the first few minutes of the final quarter.

The girls all played really well throughout the tournament and worked really well as a team on and off the court. A massive thank you goes to Courtney Day for attending the tournament as the Kaiapoi High School referee.
