Fun at the Year 11 Casio Competition!

On Tuesday 21st of June a group of Kaiapoi High School students competed against other high schools in Canterbury in the Annual Casio Calculator Year 11 Competition. This year Kaiapoi entered one team, Aaliyah Raja, Junilla Abina, Mica Wilson and Elenoa Drulidruli.

A special thank you to Mr Hanrahan for supporting the students on the night and Mr Su, who help with the last minute preparations.

This competition consisted of four rounds of complex maths questions. In between the four rounds of written tests was three rounds of game show-type maths, with one student from each of the schools competing to answer questions the quickest, using a 1953 electronic buzzer. Our own Mica Wilson stole the show on the buzzer competition and won the first round, then was into the final and placed 3rd overall. A magnificent effort.

The Green Room on the side of the Burnside Auditorium was the location of this annual and hard fought competition and was well packed out by all the Canterbury schools, representing their Mathematics cohort of Year 11s. The atmosphere was fun and exciting and our own students represented Kaiapoi High School superbly and, as always, looked impeccable.

Well done to Aaliyah, Elenoa, Junilla and Mica. Let's read what they thought:

Aaliyah - This competition was a great experience and I really enjoyed getting to see other schools competing. It really challenged us on how to use a calculator and I think that Kaiapoi High should definitely go again in future years!

Elenoa - At first this competition sounded very nerve-wracking to me, but on the night it was actually fun. I enjoyed experiencing how this math competition worked. It was impressive seeing how many students attended from schools across Christchurch. I would definitely recommend students to take this opportunity in NCEA Level 1.

Mica Wilson - I thought this competition would just be a simple competition about how well you could use a calculator. It actually required a lot of quick thinking and teamwork to solve everything. I think Kaiapoi should definitely submit teams in the future.

Junilla Abina - Going into the competition was intimidating after seeing all the schools, but it was great seeing how we compared to everyone else. The rounds were the quickest few minutes of my life and I never knew you could get so stuck with a calculator. It was a good experience and I wish the future Kaiapoi High teams good luck!

Thank you to the Canterbury Maths Association for running a competition in these uncertain times and well done to those who were involved, especially the four Kaiapoi students who were brave enough to compete.
