Athletics Success

Maree Reynolds —

KHS Athletics Day was held on Thursday 1st March. Well done to all the students who competed.

19 of these students went on to take part in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Athletics prelims.  Twelve students qualified for the finals and four of them went on to qualify to compete at the South Island Secondary Schools' Athletics Champs in Timaru. This is a fantastic achievement.  The students are:

Ryan Sangster - 1st Snr Boys' High Jump

Pirika Sinclair-Phillips - 1st Snr Boys' Hammer Throw

Layla Bailey-McDowell - 3rd Snr Girls' Hammer Throw

Sophie Vos - 2nd U16 Girls' Hammer Throw.

On the day of the South Island Champs Pirika was unfortunately unable to compete.  The other students performed very well.  Their results were:

Ryan Sangster - 6th Snr Boys' High Jump

Layla Bailey-McDowell - 6th U19 Girls' Hammer Throw

Sophie Vos - 4th U16 Girls' Hammer Throw

Ryan Sangster and Pirika Sinclair-Philips received an Elite award from Sport Canterbury at the Summer Sports Awards, held at St Margaret's College. They both received Champion Badges, Pirika for 1st in U19 Hammer Throw & Ryan for 1st in U19 High Jump. They did Kaiapoi High School proud. They will both compete at the National Secondary Schools' Athletics Championships in December.
