Junior/Intermediate Girls' Basketball

Matt Sherlock, Coach —

Yet again another basketball season draws to an end and what an honour and a privilege it was to be part of a determined, hardworking young group of Junior and Intermediate girls.

This young group have been together all year and have formed a strong core of players who work tirelessly to achieve the best result they can. We’ve gathered some mixed results during our season with some very strong performances in both close wins and losses. This team was entered in the Intermediate Division 1 competition which is already playing well above the level they’re used too. They have been a pleasure to coach, both during game play and at practice.

Despite finishing 6th and outside of the finals against some very strong opposition, the girls results proved they were deserving of being able to compete for a higher position.

The Junior girls were also lucky enough to participate in the South Island Basketball Premiership in Timaru shortly after the Friday competition. A solid pool, the girls had a few first up losses to Rangiora, Otago and Waimea, which all went on to place very well. The girls played with spirit to then finish strongly, with some very hard fought wins against Cashmere and Christchurch Girls, to place 9th in this year's South Islands. There was a huge achievement, beating their last year's result of 17th place.

Now that the girls have developed plenty of experience competing at a high level, the team will split heading into 2019, with the Senior members of the team taking the next step towards playing for the Senior A Girls' team.

A huge thanks in acknowledgment goes out to our Manager, Barry Woolford, for the continuous help he has given over the year in making sure everyone is at the games and ready to go.

I look forward to another opportunity to work with a talented group of girls during the 2019 season and cannot wait to see the level of improvement they can produce.

Well done on a successful year girls and enjoy a well deserved break. You have all shared your love and passion for the game. Keep up the hard work.
