Sports News

Hayley Newton —

This term sport got back to normality, which has been a long time coming for our students and for us in the sports office.

We have had a busy term with our winter sports getting a full season, which continues into term 3, and we also had a group of students participating in their chosen sport at Canterbury Champs in individual and team levels.

Road Champs:  It was great to have enough students keen to participate to be able to enter as a team into the Boys' Senior race. Well done to Pai Wynyard for placing 3rd and to Tia Wynyard, Wolf Pene, and Dylan Fern. Bailee & Billie-Jo Kerr-Shaw competed in the Junior Girls event. This event took place at Hagley Park.

Cross Country:  We had six students competing in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Cross Country Champs at Ascot Park. Well done to Jacob Claridge who ran in the 2km Para Race finishing 1st. This was a great effort and really well run, finishing with a personal best time which he was very proud of. Well done to Dayna Bennett, Bailee & Billie Jo Kerr-Shaw, and Tia Wynyard who all competed strongly. Pai Wynyard finished 2nd in the Senior Boys' race and has since competed in the Secondary Schools' Nationals, which was held in Nelson, where he finished 38th overall and came home with a Bronze medal in the relay event with his Canterbury schools' team.

Swimming:  Well done to Taylor Potter and Ethan Blair who competed in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Swimming Champs at Jellie Park. Taylor had a great race in the 100m freestyle, finishing 4th and Ethan Blair competed strongly, finishing with a 2nd in the 200m freestyle & 3rd in the 100m freestyle event. Ethan has then gone on to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools' Champs in Dunedin where he was very successful coming home with six medals - one gold, two silver & three bronze. An outstanding result.

Small Bore Shooting:  This term we have had a keen group of students as this was unable to happen in term 1 and it has been great to see a new group of year 9s keen to give it a go, along with our senior students that look forward to this starting every term. Small Bore takes place at MainPower Oval in Rangiora and we are very grateful to Ross and his team for this opportunity.

Pool:  This group of students increases each year and we have a mix of year groups keen to play each week at the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club. Well done to you all as we hear there is some great competition and games being played.

Self Defence:  This term we have had the opportunity to offer girls self-defence classes, which for some of the girls is a follow-on from what was offered at primary school. It has also been a great chance to build self-awareness for the students that are new to this. These classes are reinforcing the students' ability to think confidently, speak strongly and use their physical skills when necessary. We would like to thank Anna Coley, a community instructor from the Girls Self-Defence Project for the chance to offer this opportunity to our students.

Rugby:  This year we have our first KHS Boys Rugby team playing in the Canterbury Country combined U16 grade. It has been a tough season for the boys, but we are very impressed with how they have stuck together and worked hard to get a team out on the field each week, regardless of the final score, which is a real credit to them all. It was never going to be easy and for a large group of the team still being able to play U14.5, but not having the numbers to be able to have two teams, this has been a big step up into the U16 grade. We hope this jump will make them all the better in the years to come with their rugby!

We also have our first KHS Girls Rugby team playing in the Miles Toyota Cup, which plays on Wednesdays at Burnside Park. We have a large group of girls that make up this team, but with injuries and sickness our numbers have been dropping, but hopefully, with a break for the school holidays, we will have our team back to full health and finish the season strong, as this team has a lot of potential and some very skilled players and some great tacklers.

Netball:  We have six teams playing in the Saturday competition indoors at MainPower Stadium. It is definitely more appealing on those cold days to walk inside and play netball without the weather elements! Our Senior A team also plays in the Supernet competition on a Wednesday and we have our Year 9 A & Year 10 A teams preparing themselves for the upcoming South Island Secondary Schools' tournament, which is held at Hagley Park the first week of the school holidays 11th-13th July. Well done to the large group of girls that have been involved in the North Canterbury representative teams and to Lou Johnson (teacher) who coached one of the U16 girls' teams.

Basketball:  We have had a big increase in students playing this season, especially in the Friday night competition, with a total of 16 teams. This is always a great chance to get a group of friends together to make up your own team and we also have a couple of year 9 teams, who started off not knowing too many of their teammates but have been working really well as a team. We have seen some great games and the commitment from the students each week has been amazing. The Intermediate Girls' team is currently sitting top of the table. Both our Senior A Boys and Girls teams play in the Tuesday weekly Thomson & Whelan competition and have this season been moved up into Div 1 from their results last year. This has been a step up for both teams and they have been competing strongly. It has been great to see the support these teams get, especially at the home games when we get both teams playing at home together. Our Boys U15 team that plays in the Saturday club competition has been going really well and definitely another team worth watching. Thank you to our student referees - our games couldn't happen without you.

Hockey:  Our boys' team plays in the Monday night competition and, unfortunately for them, there are not a lot of teams entered in this competition. However, on a positive to this, they have had the chance to play these teams more than once and it has been great to see how much they have improved as a team from the first games they played. This team continues to grow in confidence and they are playing a great team game, which is a real credit to them for sticking together and working really hard and they have even surprised themselves. The girls play in the Wednesday competition and they have been going really well. It is great to hear that they are also working well together and are getting some great results each week.

Football:  The Senior Boys' Football team has had to go into the open grade competition due to the low number of teams for each grade. This has meant that the level of competition each week changes quite a lot and especially for the boys who are a more social team. It is great to have them out playing as they spend most of their lunchtimes out on the hockey turf kicking the ball around. It sounds like they have lots of fun and they always have new faces keen to join their team.

Badminton:  We have a girls and boys team playing in the Wednesday competition and it is great to see these students playing a new sport. Both teams have been playing really well and had some great wins.

Korfball:  Our Junior Korfball team has been playing in the Sunday competition and these students have continued on from the summer league. There is an opportunity to enter teams into the South Island Secondary Schools' Junior & Senior Champs later in term 3 as this sport continues to grow. This is exciting as this is one of the only mixed team sports on offer and it's a great team game.

Primary Sport Coaches

Thank you to the students that have helped out with the primary schools' Friday winter sports competition, which our local schools have been very thankful for. You have all done a great job and we have received some really nice feedback, which is always great to hear.

We are very grateful to the large number of coaches and managers that we have with each of our teams. We have teachers, staff, parents, and members of our community involved with our teams and we definitely could not offer all of these sporting opportunities without your invaluable help.
