Sports News

Hayley Newton —

At the start of the school year we had a lot of question marks around what sport would look like this term and thankfully, with a positive approach from everyone involved, we were able to move forward with school sport.

Volleyball

Indoor sports had the biggest impact, with our Volleyball teams having to play an in-school competition. We in the sports office were happy with how this worked out. The students were able to compete against their peers in a weekly competition on Mondays. This resulted in some competitive games, but the teams also had a work-together approach where the teams with senior students offered to help the junior teams, especially with working on their skills, being involved in their games and encouraging the teams from the sideline. This all resulted in a positive and fun competition.

Indoor Football

We had three Indoor Football teams keen to enter the Wednesday sport competition, but unfortunately due to low entries and Covid numbers affecting the teams entered, this sport had to be withdrawn for term 1. Hopefully, for the students involved, we have this much interest again in term 4.

Junior Boys Cricket

We had a team of enthusiastic years 9 & 10 boys compete in the Canterbury Country Y9-10 Super League who played on Saturdays. The team placed 5th in this competition after immense improvement from their first training to winning their final game convincingly. A huge thank you to Bronwyn King for managing this team.

Girls Cricket

A group of 13 girls signed up to take part in the Forward Foundation Shield competition, which was held at Hagley Park over four weeks. Every week the girls attended a skills training held by Canterbury Cricket in the lead up to the tournament. Unfortunately this tournament has been postponed to term four due to Covid. The enthusiasm shown by our girls was great to see and the positive relationships the girls built with one another in the short time was awesome. We look forward to the tournament in Term 4.

Dragon Boating

We had two Dragon Boating teams which the girls did KHS proud with great results on the water at the Secondary Schools' Regatta at Lake Rua in March and, especially considering the quick turnaround with just four weeks of training together, they also managed to compete in a virtual competition.

Canoe Polo

We had two teams competing in the Wednesday Canoe Polo competition, which has seen an increase in numbers this term and great to have some new juniors students involved. Thank you to the senior students that have helped the new students to become confident in the water and they have improved so much as a team, which has made for exciting games each week.

Touch

Our Touch Teams, Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Intermediate Girls, have managed to get teams out playing each week. Even through low numbers due to isolation, it has been great to see the commitment each week and, even with team defaults, there was always a keen bunch of students ready to play the following week, which was great.

Tennis

We had the same commitment from our Junior and Senior Girls Tennis Teams. Although they did not have as many games this term, the girls enjoyed it and improved from week to week.

Hockey

Our Junior Mixed Hockey team played at Nunweek Park each week and had some big competition, as this became an open grade due to the reduced team numbers this term. Well done to our team for continuing to give it your best effort each week against some tough competition.

Our Winter Hockey Teams, both Boys and Girls, are also looking good and it is great to see some new names on the team lists. These teams will to be playing in the Winter midweek competition.

Archery

Thursday was a busy afternoon on the back field, with a big group of students continuing their interest in Archery from previous years and also a new group of year 9 students who were keen to give something new a go. We also had a lot of interest in Small Bore Shooting, which unfortunately was unable to happen this term.

Korfball

On Friday Nights we had our Junior and Senior Korfball Teams entered into the competition for the first time. They did really well and, considering we had a lot of new students playing, it was great to see their improvement each week. Thankfully when isolation affected the teams, we had a keen group of students that were more than happy to fill in and get an extra game on more than one occasion. This game is definitely growing in interest and it is one sport that is a mixed team game and it is great seeing the students working well together. Congratulations to our Senior Korfball Team that won their Final 10-4, a great team effort. Our Junior team also had a win 6-4. What a great finish by both teams to the season!

Netball

We are now well into our preparations for the Winter Sport season with our six Netball Teams already training. This season we will see all our games in the Saturday North Canterbury Competition now being played indoors at Mainpower Stadium.

Rugby

We have Rugby trainings on Tuesdays after school for our Boys U14.5 + U16 teams. We have been working hard in the background with our small committee to make this work and it just needs the commitment from the boys each week to get teams out on the field to play in the Saturday Canterbury Country Competition. Our Girls Rugby team has had good interest and although we had a drop in numbers just before our 7s tournament due to isolation, we had a keen group of year 10s who were keen to give it a go. We had a great bunch of girls with lots of energy and a willingness to learn and improve, and they all worked hard and encouraged and supported each other over the six games they played. They are now training towards getting a 15-aside team to play in the Wednesday Winter competition.

Basketball

Basketball continues to be popular and great to see the team numbers continually growing and especially with the Friday night social competition, which gives students the opportunity to play with their mates. Our Senior Boys and Girls teams will compete in the Thompson Whelan Trophy competition on Tuesday nights and we have an U15 Boys team playing in the Club competition on Saturdays.

Thanks

Well done to everyone that has taken an opportunity to be involved in a sports team or activity this term. Your commitment to the team and your effort has been very much appreciated. We are very grateful for the support we get from our staff, parents and community coaches to be able to offer all these opportunities. A BIG thank you to you all.

If you are interested in playing any winter sports, please make sure you have added your names to the sign up sheets or see the sports office.
