Sports News

Hayley Newton —

We have finished Term 1 Sport with great results and it was great to see so many students representing our school with pride.

Korfball

Korfball has seen continual growth with four teams taking part in the Friday Night Competition. They played a few more weeks than our other inter-school competitions and finished the term with Summer Tournament week.

Our Senior Gold team playing in the A grade finals came away with a win against Avonside/Shirley and finished the season undefeated, which was a great finish, especially with the team down on numbers due to players being away during tournament week.

Our Senior Silver, Junior Yellow, and Junior Blue all made the 3rd-4th playoffs in their grade. Watching our teams compete strongly has been great, with the skill levels and understanding of the game improving each week.

Well done to all of our teams and a BIG thank you to the parents that have helped with transport each week, this has been greatly appreciated.

Softball

The Softball Nationals were held here in Christchurch at the Dynasty Ball Park where we had both a Girls & Boys team playing in this tournament.

This was to be played over four full days, with the teams playing up to three games of Softball a day. The weather really affected this event, with games needing to be cancelled on day one due to torrential rain and cold temperatures. This resulted in the draw needing to be reviewed each day to give all teams the chance to get out on the diamond and play.

Our girl's team finished 3rd in the Div 1 grade, which was a great way to finish the tournament, and congratulations to Tui Van Pelt for being awarded the Girls' Dv 1 Top Batter award.

Our boys improved over the week and had a tough battle every game, being moved into the Div 1 grade due to low entries in the Div 2 section.

Both teams represented our school proudly and it was exciting to be able to have our Softball students representing our school. The tournament being local made this a great opportunity to be part of.

Thank you to everyone that supported our teams over the four days.

Basketball 3x3

Our Senior Girls 3x3 Basketball Team, Terongomaianiwaniwa Williams, Aliyah Newton, Hannah Toli, Delta Shaw & Anika Shaw, travelled to Auckland to take part in the National event that was held at Pulman Arena in Auckland.

The girls competed strongly, with some outstanding results against some of the strongest basketball schools. Unfortunately, the girls just missed the top 8 playoffs due to a countback based on who beat who. They then completed the tournament finishing a creditable 11th place in NZ in the Senior Girls Elite Grade.

This was a great experience for the girls as this is the first time we have had a team compete in this event.

Just to give you an idea of how big this National Secondary Schools' event was, there were 184 teams in attendance, with over 1100 games of basketball being played over four days.

Equestrian Dressage

Well done to Loretta Woolford, Hannah Johnston, Danni Cook, and Rylie Stott that competed at the Secondary Schools' Dressage Competition, which took place at McLeans Island.

As a team, we placed 15th out of 28 schools, which was a great result and the girls were all happy with how they went on the day.

Congratulations to Hannah who placed first in both her tests and won first overall for Level 1. A great effort from all the girls and thank you to Kelsey Forge who helped the girls on the day.

It was great to see so many of our students involved as coaches, referees, or helpers at the Primary Schools' SIPT Basketball Tournament held over four days during the school holidays. Giving back and being role models to these kids is a great quality for these students to have. Well done to everyone that was involved.
As we prepare for another busy term of sport as we enter into our Winter Sports. To date, we have:

2 Hockey teams, 2 Badminton teams, 1 Football team, 11 students taking part in Small Bore Shooting, 25 students taking part in Archery, 8 Netball teams, Girls Rugby, Pool in Schools, 20 Basketball teams, including 2 Saturday teams.

Saturday Club Basketball started last week and our Under 17 boys team was the first KHS team to play this term and had a fantastic win against Christ College. This Saturday will see both our U15 & U17 Club Basketball teams playing and also our Netball teams have their first games which they play in the North Canterbury competition at Mainpower Stadium in Rangiora.

Our Wednesday Sport will not be starting until Week 3, with the exception of our three Tuesday Night Basketball teams. This Tuesday (3rd May) our Junior Boys and Senior Boys Basketball Teams both have home games, with our Senior Girls team having an away game at Rangiora High School. It will be great to see as many spectators supporting our teams over the season.

All Term 2 team information will be going out this week and we desperately need Managers for each team, especially the Friday night Basketball teams, please.

Well done to everyone that has taken the opportunity to be involved in a sports team or activity this term. Your commitment to the team and your effort have been very much appreciated. We are very grateful for the support we get from staff, parents, and community coaches to be able to offer all of these opportunities. A BIG thank you to you all.
