Tournament Week - Senior Boys' Basketball

Pete McAllister —

The boys travelled to Dunedin for a demanding eight games in four days with Coach, Allen Dvorak, Manager, Gail Sangster and Teacher-in- charge, Peter McAllister.

The boys participated in a tough pool with eventual runners up and 3rd place teams Cashmere & Shirley, and lost these section games, as well as losing to a strong Otago Boys High team. In the Shirley match-up, the team played tremendously well and looked like upsetting the more favoured seed at half-time. Unfortunately they couldn't maintain the momentum and lost the game. They then had a close match-up with St Thomas, where the result could have gone either way. The team battled hard, but was overpowered in the fourth quarter. Their final pool game versus Nayland was a good contest where they put together a good display, but were beaten 68-47.

The crossover match against St Bede's was another good contest, but they eventually lost 94-74. The following game against John McGlashan College was very close and went down to the wire before they lost 73-62. The final game against Central Southland saw the team put together a great game in which they raced out to a 15-0 start after five minutes of play. The team put together a good complete performance to run out winners, 85-63.

It was great to see Kaiapoi High School back competing at this level again after a long absence. With five players returning for next year, the experience gained was invaluable. Many thanks to the management of the team and to Bethany Pope, who represented Kaiapoi High School as a referee at the tournament.
