9A and 9V camp

Mathew Popkin —

The 9A and 9V camp was a great success! The students were really excited to get outdoors and try new things.

When almost everyone was excitedly chatting and waiting for the bus an hour ahead of schedule, I knew it was going to be a good camp.  Cell phones were handed in without complaint and the bus was full of excitement on the way there. Upon arrival, the Boyle staff were helpful and enthusiastic from the beginning, and this was matched by the students.  It was clear that these students had heard some stories about Boyle River already, and were keen to experience it for themselves.

Right from the first activity, the students were alive with enjoyment, and this passion continued throughout the camp. During the daily adventures and tasks, the students demonstrated teamwork and bravery, enjoying particular success with the lake crossing challenge, with most students staying dry and some groups progressing in near-record time!

The high ropes were tackled and conquered by a majority of students, and those earthbound kept them safe with the ropes.  The activities during the day were a great balance of trying new things, teamwork, and personal challenges.  It was great to see lots of students supporting each other during the challenging parts of a task.

Nighttime activities were also enjoyed by the students - when they weren't getting pranked by the student leaders!  The students showed their courage at night, navigating the forest and facing the darkness.  Challenges were set for students and success applauded, but the true victory was in the support and compassion shown by the group, cheering and congratulating each other when the task was complete.

Dinner was provided by a catering company and the groups were well fed - we ended the camp with three extra pizzas and a large tray of macaroni cheese. The Year 9 students rose to the 'household' chores, demonstrating their ability to help out in their own homes too - don't take no for an answer!

If the goal is to get students to try new things, to engage with the outdoors, to support each other, to accept responsibilities, and to be absolutely exhausted by the end, 9A and 9V had a very successful camp indeed.
