Te Rangapū Puka (buddy reading) programme

Ruth Keir —

Te Rangapū Puka is a buddy reading programme that is offered to the Primary kura from the Kahui Ako.

It is led by a group of senior boys who have been identified as positive role models and with the potential to be leaders within Kaiapoi High School. Te Rangapū Puka builds relationships between primary and secondary ākonga and encourages reading mileage.

Thomas Setefano (year 11), Koneferenisi Manaia (year 11), Toa Harimate-Parata (year 11), Nikau van Pelt (year 13), Hugh Ironside (year 13), Ollie Cooke (year 11), and Eli Emery (year 10) went to Woodend School and Tuahiwi kura last month. Some of the activities ākonga completed were riddles, shared reading of a chosen book, and completing SOLO maps.

The next school that is participating in the programme is Kaiapoi Borough.

"Seeing the change in the attitude of the Primary school ākonga towards reading by the end of the four weeks was a highlight for the High School tuakana. It has been a privilege to see their confidence and mana grow". - Hugh Ironside
