Sports Awards 2019

Elizabeth McMeeken —

Our third Sports Awards event on 31st October showcased the exceptional sporting talent we have at Kaiapoi High School.

Set in the auditorium, the Hospitality & Catering students added to the evening with their timely Halloween-themed table settings. They provided and served a light supper during the evening.  Our guest speaker was Dave Hewitt and he was able to engage the audience with his personal experiences. Dave was 29 when he became an All Black and his journey to this goal showed that hard work and determination can pay off. Talent alone will not guarantee success.

All 39 students who were acknowledged at the awards have reached great heights in their sport. A special congratulations must go to the 11 inductees to the Kaiapoi Sporting Hall of Fame. These students have all been placed nationally/internationally in their chosen sport or have represented New Zealand on the world stage. Another sporting achievement of note was the awarding of a 'Blue with a Gold Bar' to two students. These went to Helen Matthews for Basketball and Luke Hopkinson for Wrestling.  Our Premier Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year were awarded to Pai Wynyard and McKenzie Bailey-McDowell at the junior level and to Lewis MacDonald and Helen Matthews at the senior level.

This premier event acknowledges our sporting successes. All students were accompanied by their families, who also contribute with the support they have given in time and money to enable the pathway to success to be open.

A special thank you must go to the staff and community members who assist with the Kaiapoi High School sports programme, to our sponsors and to the team who make this event possible.
