Kaiapoi High School Basketball Success 2016

Peter McAllister —

Basketball is alive and well at Kaiapoi High School, with a record 11 teams entered this year.

The results from this season would have to be one of the best on record for the school. Of the 11 teams, 8 made it to their respective final, with 6 teams winning their grade.

Our Intermediate Girls A Basketball team won the Christchurch Secondary Schools' Intermediate elite grade competition. It was a good final, with the girls showing plenty of skill and commitment throughout, to beat Cashmere HS 75-56. The team was led by Helen Matthews, who was unstoppable at both ends of the floor, along with Sinead McConchie, Olivia Attewell, Amelia Archer, Katie Reeve and Eliza McCracken. Solid supporting roles came from Cecilia Anderson, Lucia Davis, Ally MacCormack, Kaylee McCracken, Bethany Pope, and Sophie Vos. Next year we plan to continue having a team in this grade, and also enter a Senior girls & boys team into the top elite grade that plays on a Tuesday evening.

Our Senior Boys team also tasted victory in the Christchurch Secondary Schools' Senior Boys Division 1 Friday competition. They beat Rangiora HS in the final 48-41. Our Intermediate Boys Year 10A team beat St Andrews in their final, while both of our Year 9 Boys teams also chalked up wins in their respective grades. Our Year 9 Boys Blue team, coached by senior student Cameron Wilson, beat Rangiora New Life 55-33 in their final, while the Gold team, coached by senior student Sam McCartin, beat Christchurch Boys High School 57-18. Our Senior Girls team beat Rangi Ruru in the Division 3 final 66-29. Our Senior Girls B team lost a close game to Christchurch Girls High School in their final, while our Intermediate Girls B team lost to Papanui HS in a hard fought match 25-38.

These are great results for the school, in what is deemed to be the fastest growing major sport in New Zealand. With this continued growth, the school is looking for more coaches and managers for the 2017 season. If you are interested, please contact Sports Coordinator Maree Reynolds.
