Sports News

Hayley Newton —

Our winter sports are well underway and it is great to see the amount of participation, improvement and enjoyment within KHS Sport.

Wednesday Sport will continue into Term 3, with the same sports and existing teams. All sport starting the first week back, with the exception of Small bore and Archery, starting week 2.

Cross Country

On Thursday 6th June we had a small group of runners competing in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Cross Country Champs held at Ascot Park. They all ran so well and finished with great results.

Well done to:

Jacob Claridge, yr 13 - Para 2km - 1st out of 17 runners

Isaac Lyon,  yr 9 - 3 km  - 8th out of 39 runners

Rebecca Ross, yr 9 - 3 km - 14th out of 43 runners

Cross Country Nationals

On 15th and 16th of June the Secondary Schools' Nationals were held at Ascot Park in Christchurch.

Sophie Jolly, yr 10 & Isaac Lyon, yr 9 represented our school in the 3km race in their age grade on Saturday and represented Canterbury in the teams' relay races on Sunday morning.

It was great to have the national event held here this year, giving our students the opportunity to complete and experience a secondary schools' national event and to run with some of NZ’s best cross country runners! Well done to you both, we hope you enjoyed the experience and you did so well with the large number of runners in each age group.

Sport Coaches

Thank you to the students that have helped out with the primary schools' Friday winter sports competition, which our local schools have been very thankful for. You have all done a great job and we have received some really nice feedback, which is always great to hear.

This year our local primary schools were lucky enough to have a massive group of 22 student sport coaches.

Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week in Aotearoa

Last week was Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week in Aotearoa! It was a time to recognise and celebrate volunteers.

With this in mind, we would like to acknowledge the staff, parents, community coaches and students that support us, and give our students the opportunity each week to take part in the sport of their choice. They give their valuable time and energy to make sport possible and also don't forget the life skills and lessons that sport creates. You are all part of these experiences for our students.

We would like to thank them for being the contact people that has made it so easy to communicate with, we thank you for your time and effort in coaching a team, or for getting our teams to where they need to be with transport and communicating with students and parents. All of these things are so important to grow the opportunities and it's these people that we rely on to help make this possible.

A massive thank you to all our volunteers for the difference they make and the impact they have on our young people.
