Senior Girls' Basketball Tournament

Peter McAllister —

During tournament week, the senior girls' team travelled north to Nelson this year in search of a high placing in the South Island Secondary Schools' champs.

Their first game was against the eventual winners, Christchurch Girls High School. It was a hard-fought game, with the team going down by 7 points. This ended up being the closest margin that any team got to CGHS throughout the entire tournament. The second game was a comfortable win over Avonside Girls, which meant the last pool game against Waimea College was critical in gaining a top 8 finish. The game was a high-pressure affair with plenty of local support for the opposition. The girls really produced a great effort to comfortably beat Waimea by 15 points. This put the girls through to the quarter-finals, where their opponent was Rangi Ruru. This was a tough matchup for the girls and Rangi played extremely well on the day to beat us by approximately 15 points. The next game was to be the most crucial with a matchup against St Andrew's College. The team had already beaten them in the regular competition earlier in the season and tension was high. The winner got to go to the national tournament....the loser didn't. The girls played very tired to begin with and St Andrew's started very well. The girls rallied twice in the second half when facing a considerable deficit, but were unable to break down their defense, going down in a narrow loss. The girls were disappointed with the loss but were dignified in their defeat. The final game resulted in an easy victory over James Hargest College from Invercargill.

Many thanks to the team manager Pete McCracken for his sterling work over the season and for the previous three seasons as well!. Also thanks to coaches Pete McAllister and Matt Sherlock for their time throughout the tournament and season.
