Senior Girls' Netball Tournament

Jayne Dewe —

The Senior A team participated in the 55th Annual Senior Secondary Schools' Netball Tournament in Dunedin from 3rd to 6th September.

With a seeding of 25th in A grade secured from 2017, the pool draw was always going to be a tough ask.

First up was Waitaki Girls, where Kaiapoi competed admirably and lost.

The second pool game was against Villa Maria College (the eventual competition winners), where Kaiapoi was completely out classed.  The third pool game witnessed a narrow loss against Wakatipu High School. Therefore, with these results, a top 16 finish was impossible.

With vigour and focus, the team was determined to maintain A grade status and work towards the best finish possible. With this in mind and the arrival of Amelia Archer after a heavy dose of the flu, results started to come. The last three games witnessed very comprehensive wins, resulting in a 25th finish out of 32 for 2018.

This result, although disappointing, enabled the team to develop new talent coming through for the following years' tournaments, which is very encouraging.  For Year 13 students, Maddison Bell, Nicole Pohio and Amelia Archer, it is an end of an era. These girls have been hugely influential in the success of this team over the last three years. We wish them well and thank them for their dedication and contribution to the development of a strong netballing culture at Kaiapoi High School.

Sincere thanks also to Marg Johstone (umpire) and her generous supply of free range eggs from Pataka Berries for the week away. Also to Vicki Irons for netball support and all our fantastic parents and whanau that travelled to Dunedin to support the team. And finally a massive thank you to Maree Reynolds who 'makes it all happen'. We look forward to the challenges in Nelson in 2019!
