South Island Secondary Schools' Rock Climbing Competition

David Chen —

For the first time, this year we had three students enter the competition and they all did really well.

The students were Eli Callaghan-Thomas, Ben Lowrey and Hunter Smith, all Year 11 students. Each student need to do around 25 climbs each on day one and it is hard for even a semi-pro climber to climb 25 rounds consecutively. Thus, our students from Kaiapoi High School did an incredibly good job during the competition.

Each round was worth five points. If the climber gets off ground, that was two points, passing the middle line was another two points, and the last point was when the climber reached the top of the climb. Between each round, students have eight minutes to complete the climb. Because we only had three students entering the competition, one of the students need to climb twice, to gain more points.

The outcome of the competition was great, we were placed 12th out of 24 teams. This was an amazing achievement, especially considering this was our first time entering the competition and we don’t even have a climbing club at school yet. We also won the most energetic team at the prizegiving. Well done boys.
