Sports News

Hayley Newton —

We are now in the final weeks of our Winter Sports Competition with finals taking place this week.

A full review of our Winter Sports Season will be added to the School Magazine, this is just a brief overview of what has been taking place throughout the winter season.

NETBALL

Well done to all of our Netball teams. We have had our Senior A Team competing in the Premier Grade on Thursday nights which has seen some tough competition. They have completed strongly and grown their game from this opportunity. Our 10 Saturday Club Teams have done really well throughout the season. We had six teams in the semi-finals and from this we have three teams qualify for the North Canterbury Netball Finals in their grades. Best of luck to the KHS Senior 2, Senior 4 & Senior 5 Teams who play their finals this Saturday.

A big thank you to all of our volunteer coaches and managers who are community coaches, parents, teachers and students. We are very grateful for all of your time and effort with our teams.

BASKETBALL

Well done to all our Basketball teams, it has been great to see so much interest and having 24 teams competing each week has been awesome. We have had 18 Friday Night teams with 10 of these teams playing off in the top four of their grade. Thank you to the many parents who have helped with coaching or transport this season, it has been a big team effort by everyone.  Of our Saturday Club teams, we had two teams in the U17 grade with our Senior team making it to the semi-finals. Our Jnr U17 Team and our U15 teams have both been competitive in their grades. All three teams have shown great improvement and teamwork over the season. A big thank you to Simon Hazeldine, Pete McAllister & Ash Gilmore for all your time and effort with these teams.

Our three Tuesday Night Competition teams have competed strongly with our Junior Boys playing in the Grocott Trophy and making the semi-finals. This team has worked hard under the student coach Hayden Downes and their results have reflected their efforts. Our Senior Boys had some tough competition which helped them grow as a team in the early part of the competition before being split into two sections, with the 2nd half of the season allowing more competitive games. It was great to see the team getting some wins for all their hard work.

Our Senior Girls Basketball Team made the FINALS of the Div 1 Thompson Trophy Competition that has been played on Tuesday Nights. This was a big accomplishment as the first KHS Girls Team to make it to the Div 1 Finals, an awesome achievement. The girls played St Andrews who were undefeated this season so it was going be a tough battle. The team played hard to the final whistle, going down to a good shooting STAC team. Thank you to all of our supporters that added to the atmosphere of the night.

BADMINTON

This season we had an increase in interest for playing badminton with six teams playing in the Wednesday Competition. We had returning players and new players to the sport who have gain interest from taking part in PE. It was great to see them all keen to play each week.

FOOTBALL

Our Football 7-aside mixed team has had a fun season with this team having a mix of ages. They have worked well developing their skills and gelling as a team with the help of Miss Keer Keer and the senior players.

HOCKEY

Our Girls' team have been playing in the Canterbury Hockey Schools Competition and have been competing strongly being moved up into division 2. They are looking forward to continuing this in tournament week. Our Boys' team have struggled on numbers this season and we are grateful for the girls that have been filling in each week to get the team out on the turf.

RUGBY

Our Girls' team are playing in the Miles Toyota Cup Competition at Burnside Park on Wednesdays. The team still have two more games left in the season and it has been great to see so many keen new players.

DARTS

We have a small group of students that have taken the opportunity to have a go at darts which takes place in the Darts Hall in town.  Mr Liddell has been transporting the team each week and has enjoyed the opportunity as much as the students.

POOL

We are very grateful to the KWMC that supports our Pool students with the Pool in Schools opportunity to practice and teach our students.  We have had Alyssa Bailey & Charly Light take part in competition already this season with the school champs still to take place.

EQUESTRIAN

On Sunday 11th August, we had a combined Equestrian Team that competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' One Day Event held at the Equestrian Centre in McLeans Island. The girls had a great day and were happy with how their horses performed, finishing 11th out of 26 teams.  Our team is now preparing for the four-day event that is taking place over Winter Tournament Week.

SMALLBORE SHOOTING

Our keen group of shooters have enjoyed their weekly sessions, which take place at MainPower Oval. The challenge is to better their score from the previous week.

ARCHERY

We have had another big group of students taking part in Archery again this term with two sessions, to give every student who signed up the opportunity to take part. These sessions take place on Thursdays on the backfield.

PRIMARY SCHOOL WINTER TOURNAMENT

On Tuesday 6th August, we had a large group of 31 students that helped our local primary schools, Kaiapoi North, Kaiapoi Borough & Woodend School, who were participating in the one-day tournament with Coaching & Umpiring/Refereeing. Our students helped with Netball, Hockey, Football & Rugby. It was great to have a keen group of students willing to give back and help our local schools. This was very much appreciated by the students and especially the staff involved.
