The Adventures of Alice in Horrorland

Celia Breen —

TWO WEEKS UNTIL OPENING NIGHT!

PHEW! The cast and crew of The Adventures of Alice in Horrorland pulled together for a HUGE week of rehearsals during the school holidays. Working from 10 - 5 every day of the second week of the holidays, our incredible cast acted, danced, sang, played, and NAILED it on stage.

Monday and Tuesday were filled with ‘rough’ run-throughs that allowed us to assess the state of each Act and work out where to focus our attention first. The professionalism of the cast on Monday in particular was outstanding.

We had a rough start to Wednesday when we arrived at school to find there was no power in the area. In true kiwi fashion, we adapted and overcame adversity and instead filled the Karetū atrium with the dulcet tones of our 40-strong cast singing ‘Time Warp’. The cast was so excited to get to try on their costumes. Ms Mitchell and her team of makeup artists transformed lots of our cast with excellent character makeup too.

Thursday’s rehearsal saw the addition of both costume and lighting which, while enhancing the action on stage, definitely slowed down the pace of our rehearsals. The energy from the cast was still strong and Mr Morrison, the director, was very pleased with the overall performance.

Friday was the 5th day in a row of long rehearsals, and everyone was tired. We added wireless microphones to the mix, which again slowed the pace but proved just how awesome are cast is as they waited with incredible patience and understanding. Friday afternoon showed just how committed the cast were, with a special mention to Lili Batterbury who FILLED the auditorium with sass and energy as the devil.

For the next two weeks, we are rehearsing most afternoons to give both casts two chances to do full run-throughs before we have our first dress rehearsal in week 3.

We are aiming to have an opt-in performance for our years 9 and 10 students to view the production on Monday 8th May. More information about this will be available once it has been confirmed!

Our contributing primary schools then get to view the excellent musical on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th May.

Thursday is also the first of our three evening performances and we have just confirmed that snacks and treats made by a Business Studies crew will be available for purchase EXCLUSIVELY at Thursday evening’s performance.

Friday and Saturday evening performances are for an exclusive audience of 90 diners who will enjoy delicious three course meals - truly amazing value at $50 for ‘dinner and a show’.

Still haven’t bought your tickets? Make sure you don’t miss out by purchasing them soon at the school office.

We can’t wait to see you there! You might say we are filled with antici…….pation!
