Elizabeth McMeeken β November 19, 2021
Sadly, our Deputy Principal, Elizabeth McMeeken, is retiring this year.
Here are some final words from Elizabeth.
βKia ora, ni sa bula, talofa lava, kia orana, malo e lelei, fakaalofa lahi, fakamolemole, warm greetings to all.
I have always been a person who has looked to challenge myself and try to make a difference. I love teaching. I have a passion for my specialty subjects: History, Classical Studies, and English. I call them ' the trifecta'. I was always happy teaching this combination. Over the years I have had many different roles in the teaching profession. I trained as a primary teacher and spent three years in that area. I was an Assistant Head of Special Needs, a Dean, a Head of Music, a Careers Advisor, and an Assistant Principal. It was in the latter role that I came to Kaiapoi High School in 2003.
I felt an instant affinity for the school. It was quite different then. A lot smaller and the buildings were stark blocks. I was welcomed by Whaea Danna and the Kapa Haka students. That was very special for me. I immediately felt at home.
In my 18 plus years at Kaiapoi High, I have seen many changes, all of them positive. I was able to challenge myself in my current role as Deputy Principal and in those times I served as Acting Principal. In each of these roles, I have always had the support of the Board of Trustees, staff, and the school community.
If I had to pick the one thing I am most proud of during my time here it would be that I was part of a team that enabled students to succeed as their best selves. 'Tupu tahi tatou', (together we grow) has been a driving influence for me in all that I do. I believe we all need to play a part in achieving our goals, both personal and collective.
I have always been proud to say that I work at Kaiapoi High School. I will always be keen to see how Kaiapoi High School is progressing with all the changes and growth it is experiencing. It is not with sadness but with excitement that I am moving on. I do not want to be beyond my use-by date!
Finally, find what you want to do and enjoy doing it. Keep safe and be happy with who you are.β
