Cohort entry for new entrants from term 1, 2023

After community consultation, Kaiapoi North School will begin cohort entry for new entrant (5-year-old) enrolments from Term 1, 2023.

There will be two cohort entry dates per term:

  • One group on the first day of a term
  • The second group at the midpoint of a term

WHY cohort entry?

Starting school alongside other children helps children build relationships and supports a more effective entry to their learning journey at school. It is particularly noticeable how quickly NE settle at the start of a school year when several children start together. It is about ensuring a child has the best possible start in school. It provides less disruption for NE teachers and ākonga in the learning community. The perceived negative of cohort entry is that children will be required to attend ECE for a longer period, creating a wait time for their enrolments. However, most ECE do not run to capacity and this may be of benefit to them.

NOTE: An increasing number of schools in Canterbury and around New Zealand have adopted Cohort Entry.
